In this day and age, I feel that super foods have come to be known as a fad or something companies create for profit.
This, in my opinion, is the contrary of what super foods are. I have enjoyed the multiple benefits they have given me and wanted to share them with you so that maybe you could start your journey to feeling your best self!
Some of them may seem a bit pricey, but they will last you a while, which in the end is a good investment considering how much use you get out of one package. I also like to buy mine from Amazon to lower costs. I find it that it is less expensive compared to Whole Foods and plus who doesn’t like getting a package from Amazon and feel like it’s Christmas morning all over again? 🙂
I think over time, we have forgotten that we should treat food as medicine and feed ourselves with the right type of fuel for sustainable energy. With all the products and over processed foods nowadays, which our ancestors did not have, companies have made it hard for us to remember to treat food as fuel for our brains and body.
The below items are super easy to incorporate into your daily life, and the amount of natural energy you get along with how amazing you feel beats the sluggish feeling you get after a heavy meal. I’m just saying your beautiful body, brain and soul deserves your attention and love, so feed it with things that will help you achieve your best day!
Here are some of the super foods I use everyday:
Why spend the money on Acai bowls when you can easily make them yourself? I like the powder version better than the frozen one because I find it easier to blend. Little background on Acai: it is a grape-like berry and derived from South America. It can help with issues related to your skin, digestion, allergies, immune system, and energy levels. It is a great source of antioxidants, an aphrodisiac, a brain booster, and a great weapon against premature aging, cancer, and unexplained fatigue or exhaustion. Are you convinced yet? Tip: to make an Acai bowl more filling, add protein powder or a nut butter into the mixture!
   2. Avocado
Contrary to what you may think of Avocados because of their high fat content, they can actually help you with your weight loss goals. Also, does anyone else have avocado toast for breakfast, lunch or dinner? So easy and such a feel good super food. It makes you feel full and content for so long.
If you haven’t tried Chia seed pudding yet, you’re doing it wrong. No, seriously go try it! I love adding chia seeds to my oatmeal or smoothies. And yes, these are the same seeds that were used for Chia Pet (such a waste!). Chia seeds belong to the mint family and are gluten free. They are a great source of good fat – omega 3, balance blood sugar levels, crush cravings, complete source of protein and a great source of calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, phosphorus and folic acid.
Love these for salads, banana bread, your own plant-based milk, or on top of cereal for added nutrients. This is a great protein option for vegetarians. They contain all nine essential amino acids found in animal foods and twenty amino acids in total. Just 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds contains 10 g of protein! Hemp seeds are easy on the digestive system and more reason to love hemp seeds is that they are building blocks for neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. I wasn’t kidding when I said these super foods make me feel good, now science can back me up too. 🙂
If you have hard time consuming enough fiber, this one’s for you. Only two tablespoons of serving will provide you with two grams of dietary fiber and provide you with your daily value of folic acid, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc and vitamin E. Can be replaced for one half cup of flour when baking cookies. I like to use it in my oatmeal or yogurt.
This one has crazy amounts of benefits that I could talk about for days. I recently started incorporating this into my diet. Flax seed oil is rich in essential fatty acids and is used to prevent and treat heart disease and relieve any inflammatory disorders and any hormonal issues. As a healing herb, it has been known to treat issues from heart disease to lupus. It is an excellent source of omega 3’s. Potential benefits include: lowering cholesterol, protecting against heart disease and controlling against high blood pressure. It also controls constipation, hemorrhoids, gallstones and treats any skin issues such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn and rosacea. I like to also put this in my smoothies, but I’m sure you could incorporate it with any drink as this does not have an distinct flavor.
Great source of energy. Powerhouse of vitamins such as B12, vitamin E, minerals and amino acids. Ironically, it has been known to be highly effective at combating allergies. This spring/summer, fight pollen allergies with bee pollen!
8. Maca Powder
This one is good in smoothies. It does have an earthy nutty flavor so in my opinion, it is not good incorporating with everything. Maca is great for your skin, balances hormones, increases fertility for both men and women, helps your immune system, increases energy, and improves sexual function, memory, and focus.
These little berries look a bit like raisins, but have a different berry flavor. Some claim they are the fountain for youth. Once my mom heard that, she’s been hooked ever since! Over the years, goji berries have been used for problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, fever and eye problems. The list could go forever with all the benefits for these, but I’ll stop here and let you try them out!
Cacao is an ancient food, once valued by the Maya and the Aztecs which was used as currency. You want to aim to get the cacao version instead of cocoa as the latter is highly processed with heat and does not offer all the health benefits of cacao. Cacao is one of the richest sources of antioxidants – more than green tea or red wine! It is rich in magnesium hence the reason women crave chocolate during PMS when their levels of magnesium are at its lowest. Other minerals include, calcium, zinc, iron, copper, sulfur and potassium.
