Today we are using my favorite superfood in 3 easy recipes.
I am excited to announce that I’ve partnered up with Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods to bring you these healthy recipes.
So, what are hemp seeds? They are nutritious seeds which are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, a complete protein source, and a rich source of essential minerals which include magnesium, phosphorus, iron and zinc.
I love these because of how versatile they are. Hemp seeds are one superfood that I know I can incorporate into my daily routine without really putting too much thought into it. I like to sprinkle it on my salads, smoothies, peanut butter sandwich…really the possibilities are endless. These have a nutty flavor, but I think you really cannot taste them, which makes it easier to incorporate into your meals. Hemp hearts/seeds are great for vegans or vegetarians as a way to get in their protein intake. Hemp seeds are certainly my favorite superfoods and I hope that you can give them a try and reap the benefits.
And if you were thinking it — no hemp seeds will not get you high. They are part of the same plant species as marijuana, Cannabis Sativa L, but have major differences. Hemp plant is taller and not as stalkier. The hemp plant contains low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is about 0.3% whereas marijuana contains anything from 5-30%. It is said that is impossible to get high with hemp hearts due to the above facts and the staff attorney at Drug Policy Alliance, Jolene Formene has confirmed that. Also, no they will not cause you to fail a drug test.
Now that you know all the facts, let’s get on with the recipes.
Pumpkin Bread Mini Loafs
Now that it is officially fall, we can make all the pumpkin recipes, right? I made these in a small individual loaf pans because I love being able to have the perfect portion for myself, which is great for when you are on the go! I bought mine from TJ Max/Home Goods store near me, but I’m sure you could find it anywhere.
I also made mine with flax eggs by combining 1 tbsp flax meal with 3 tbsp of water. You can purchase flax meal here, if you are interested. If you are making this, I suggest making this first and letting it wait to form into a gel consistency while you get everything else ready.
I added a half cup of Manitoba Hemp Hearts in this recipe and it seriously is my favorite part of this and the reason I love it so much. It adds protein to this “healthier” recipe and is perfect for breakfast or a filling snack!
Next, get all your dry ingredients in a bowl and combine all with all the wet ingredients. I added one banana to mine to make it more sweet, but if you don’t like bananas, then you can always add more honey or sweetener of your choice.
I added dark chocolate chunks to mine and they make this recipe so delicious but that is also optional.
Next, grease your pan, preheat your oven to 350 and bake in the oven for 60-65 minutes. Cool in a cooling rack for 5-10 min and enjoy 🙂
Hemp Seed Pumpkin Bread
- 1 ripe spotty banana
- 1 cup wheat flour
- 1 cup light spelt flour or regular flour
- ½ Cup Hemp Hearts
- ¼ Cup raw honey
- 2 flax eggs or 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- ¼ Cup melted coconut oil (cooled) or regular oil
- ¼ Cup dairy free chocolate chunks
- 1 can of pumpkin puree
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- Prepare your flax egg — 2 tbsp flax meal mixed with 6 tbsp water. If you are using eggs, skip this step.
- In a large bowl, smash your bananas and mix in your flag eggs or 2 regular eggs, coconut oil, vanilla, can of pumpkin puree, and honey. If you do not want to add bananas, add more honey for sweetness.
- Next, mix in all of your dry ingredients in a different bowl and mix around to ensure there are no lumps (if you have a sifter, use that, I did not have one!).
- Mix in dry and wet ingredients with a spatula. Once nicely incorporated, add in chocolate chunks and hemp hearts.
- Line a loaf pan with parchment paper or grease the pan and pour in the mixture in the pan.
- Bake in the oven for 60-70 minutes or until golden brown.
2. Hemp Hearts Milk
This is such an easy and delicious recipe! I wouldn’t drink this on its own like milk, but it’s great mixed in smoothies or with cereal. I would suggest that you don’t add the full cup of hemp hearts all in your Nutri Bullet all at once because it’s too much to handle and it gets too foamy. If you have a bigger blender then go ahead!
I added 3 dates to sweeten mine, but you could also add honey or no sweetener at all! Also, I added vanilla extract to add the vanilla flavor, just like if you were to get vanilla flavored almond milk, but once again if you like things plain, then skip this step.
Once everything is is nicely incorporated in the blender, we are using a cheese cloth to smooth out the recipe. You can transfer the milk from the bowl into a glass jar and that is it! It will take you no longer than 5 minutes to make this recipe and is good for 3-5 days in your fridge.
Hemp Hearts Milk
- 1 cup of Manitoba Hemp Heart
- 5 cups of filtered water
- 3 dates or sweetener of your choice
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- Mix all ingredients in a blender until nicely incorporated
- In a large bowl with a cheesecloth over it, pour in your hemp milk
- Store in a glass jar with a tight lid and enjoy up to 3-5 days
3. Green Smoothie Using Hemp Hearts Milk
Guys, I love this smoothie so much. You cannot taste the greens in it at all and is basically bullet proof — it comes out delicious each time!
Using the milk we made above, it makes this smoothie so creamy and delicious.
I don’t think I have to explain much with this recipe, so here we go:
Green Smoothie Using Hemp Seeds
- half frozen banna
- mango chunks
- handful of kale or spinach
- 1 tsp maca powder
- 1 tbsp flax oil
- 1 tbsp manitoba hemp hearts
- 1 cup of hemp milk
- 1 tbsp peanut butter
- Mix all ingredients in a blender and enjoy.
For toppings, I added coconut shreds and a dash of cinnamon, but any topping (or no topping) of your choice would work! i.e. – cacao nibs, chia seeds, goji beries, etc.
That is all! Hope you guys enjoy these recipes! If you make them be sure to tag me on Instagram @memoallure or Twitter @memoallure8, I would love to see your creations!
Hope you guys have an amazing season and enjoy your weekend!
Until next time,
